Supervisors: Jean Carlos Montero-Serrano, Guillaume St-Onge

Research topic: Reconstruction of natural climatic and oceanographic variability in the estuary and Gulf of St. Lawrence (EGSL) during the last 10,000 years. Physical properties, magnetic parameters, grain size, bulk mineralogy, elemental geochemistry, and radiogenic isotopes (Sr-Nd-Hf) of three sediment piston cores recovered in the Laurentian Channel (eastern Canada) are investigated to (1) reconstruct long-term changes in detrital sediment provenance and water mass transport related to climate variability in the last deglaciation and Holocene, and (2) provide new insights on potential relations between sea-level variations and sediment dynamics in the EGSL. The proposed multi-proxy approach will help to better document the internal natural variability in the St. Lawrence climate-ocean system during the last 10,000 years, as well as their potential trends caused by anthropogenic climate forcing.

Progress update: Marie took part in oceanographic campaign "Old Harry" in the Gulf of St. Lawrence onboard R/V Coriolis II in 2015 and in "CASEIS" in the Caribbean sea onboard R/V Pourquoi pas in 2016. She has also completed various geological and geochemical analyses, including radiogenic isotopes (Sr, Hf, Nd).
