Annie-Pier Trottier

Ph.D. Candidate
Laval University

Supersivor: Patrick Lajeunesse

Starting date: November 2016

Research topic: Fjords are structurally controlled drowned valley forming deep depositional basins at the interface of oceans and continents. High-resolution multibeam bathymetric data and acoustic sub-bottom profiles were collected in numerous fjords of North-Eastern America from 2003 to 2017 during field trips onboard the CCGS Amundsen and the R/V Louis-Edmond-Hamelin. The analysis of the database allows the identification of similarities in morphological patterns and stratigraphic architectures in these depositional systems in order to establish an evolution model of the sedimentation processes.

Progress update: High-resolution bathymetric data and acoustic sub-bottom profiles were collected in many fjords of Quebec, Labrador, Baffin and Ellesmere islands during Arcticnet missions or field trips of the Laboratoire de Géosciences Marines (LGM, ULaval). The hydroacoustic database now includes more then 13 fjords. Analysis on the geomorphology and the stratigraphic architecture of each fjord allow to establish a model of sedimentation according to their regional settings (altitude, seismic zone proximity, position relative to ice-margin stabilization complex, etc.)
